When Cell Towers Become Too Smart For Their Own Good

Presented at ToorCon San Diego 14 (2012), Oct. 20, 2012, 5 p.m. (50 minutes)

Remember that bully that was bigger than you and though he may not have been as smart as you, he knew how to make you cry? Yeah, that is this talk when it comes to Intelligent Base Station. As more people start using cellular devices for everything, cellular companies are making "Frequency Sharing Friendly" base stations, so why not attack them. Utilizing SDRs and cognitive radio attacks, we will explore how these new Intelligent Base Stations maybe too smart for their own good.

Presenters:

  • Drew Porter / RedShift as Drew "RedShift" Porter
Drew "RedShift" Porter is Mobile Security Exploit Engineer at Cummings Engineering in Arizona. During the day RedShift plays with cellphones and SATCOMM, as well as being a Jedi master when it comes to avoiding the FCC. RedShift spends the majority of his free time researching cellular devices, the network through which they communicate on; it has even been rumored that he can build a mean tin foil hat. Like most security professionals, RedShift does his best work after a few beers. If you ever attend one of his talks, he encourages you all to bring a few drinks to enjoy (He certainly will be bringing some).
