Telegram, Translations, and Twitter: How a Covert Russian Disinformation Effort Is Bypassing Censorship and Targeting Global Audiences

Presented at ShmooCon 2023, Jan. 22, 2023, 10 a.m. (60 minutes)

Nisos researchers discovered a Telegram channel promoting multilingual propaganda videos targeting specific regions in Ukraine that were later annexed into Russia. We also found a network of international Twitter accounts promoting the channel’s videos via coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB), plus additional accounts on Gab, Gettr, and TruthSocial. We discovered that the actor behind the network was none other than RT and that Margarita Simonyan herself promoted the initiative in Russian-language media. Our analysis offers new insights into evolving Russian TTPs aimed at bypassing platform restrictions and sanctions.
