Closing Plenary: OK, So What IS Working?

Presented at ShmooCon 2023, Jan. 22, 2023, 1 p.m. (60 minutes).

It’s easy to get lost in the daily grind of vulnerability disclosures, breach notifications, and industry hype to lose sight of the fact that, on balance, we are constantly improving our security landscape. Understanding how to apply these improvements to your systems and environment can be tricky. But never fear, our closing plenary is here to help. A panel of practitioners will talk about what IS working for them. We’ll cover topics like endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and cybersecurity insurance. We’ll even be taking topics from the audience. The goal of this panel is to provide the audience with practical patterns they can follow (or at least follow up on) as they work to continually improve their security posture.

Presenters:

  • Mark Manning / AntiTree as Mark Manning
Mark Manning (@antitree) is a Product Security Architect at Snowflake and previously led security consultations with a wide range of customers to help them solve security problems using sandboxing, containers, and Kubernetes-like platforms. He’s been working on a wide range of security problems such as software supply chain security, business risk issues, and secure management of Kubernetes clusters. Mark has presented at various conferences including ShmooCon, BSides, and local conferences.
  • SPAM
SPAM (@spam@infosec.exchange, @sirspamsalot) is just this guy, ya know? He has been working on IT and infosec in the non-profit sector for nearly 20 years. In his spare time he is a serial hacker conference volunteer. You may have seen him hurriedly running around the back hallways of events like BSides Las Vegas, ShmooCon, and HushCon. He is also the founder of Shabb@Con (@ShabbatCon@defcon.social, @ShabbatCon).
  • Tina Velez
The sweet, discordant screech of her first 4800 dial up experience still fresh in her ears, Tina Velez has been firmly attached to computers and all things technology from a young age. Having little idea of what she wanted to do when she grew up, Tina majored in psychology before spending a decade plus wearing various hats in state government and higher education before transitioning to the private sector to continue building on her experience. Since joining the team at Expel, Tina has worked in both pre- and post- sales, first supporting delivery to Expel’s clients before pivoting to all things technical presales. When not managing the Enterprise Solutions Architecture team, Tina may be found exploring new places, searching for the perfect chef’s tasting menu, and moving heavy things from point A to point B.
