Dealing with anxiety in infosec

Presented at BSides Austin 2017, May 4, 2017, 1 p.m. (60 minutes)

Abstract: With an increasingly demanding work culture, balancing your work and personal life is crucial to one's mental health.  However, achieving success in the field of infosec often requires dedication, extra hours, and a mental focus that can upset a healthy work-life balance.  In many cases, the imbalance is either slight or temporary in nature.  In some cases, the imbalance is much more severe.  Depending on individual drive or one's personality, people can easily find themselves experiencing burnout in a field of work they once loved. But burnout isn't the only danger.  Anxiety and panic attacks are also an issue.  In this presentation, Brad leads a structured discussion about stress, anxiety, and the possibility of panic attacks on the road to achieving your career goals.  Brad reveals his past struggle with panic attacks and discusses how he resolved the situation.  He suggests strategies for dealing with anxiety/stress and also invites the audience to share their experiences with anxiety related to their careers.
