Locking down NZ COVID Tracer

Presented at Kawaiicon 2 (2022) Rescheduled, July 2, 2022, 11:45 a.m. (30 minutes).

By now most people will know NZ COVID Tracer, the app designed by the Ministry of Health to support contact tracing for COVID-19.

This is the story of how we built the app, with particular focus on designing a security and privacy model, during the early days of the pandemic response and Alert Level 4.

Presenters:

  • Patrick Hindmarsh
Patrick is a principal architect at the Ministry of Health, mostly working on public facing digital services, websites, apps, APIs and such. A web developer in a previous life, he now spends most of his time drawing UML diagrams on a whiteboard and arguing with other architects about the correct pastel colours to use in Visio.
