Don Donzal from eLearnSecurity, sponsor of this year's Career Village, interviews three industry veterans about the many various paths into cybersecurity. Ping Look will bring her experiences as a technical hiring manager for defense and response, Sara Pickering as a human resources consultant and recruiter, and Carlota Sage as an IT leader turned vCISO, to paint a picture for the audience of the many twisty-turny paths you can take to get into Cybersecurity, and especially what hiring managers look for when hiring candidates without a security background.

Ping Look is passionate about bringing people together to solve problems and currently at the helm of Microsoft’s Detection & Response Team. Prior to joining Microsoft, Ping was engaged at Optiv, formerly known as Accuvant LABS, where she managed one of the most technically proficient pentest and research teams in the world before transitioning to focus on advising enterprise customers on how to build and foster security-minded culture. Prior to Optiv, Ping had a long tenure in the security events industry building the iconic brands of Black Hat and DEF CON. Ping still serves on the Black Hat Briefings and Training Global Review Board.

Sara Pickering

Sara Pickering is the Director of Talent Development at Independent Security Evaluators (ISE). Self-proclaimed HR Nerd, she works with business leaders to ensure that people strategy aligns with company values and culture. Sara strives to build trust and high levels of employee engagement while supporting teams and leaders to achieve their goals. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion in the cybersecurity industry. Before ISE, Sara worked at Experis IT Solutions for 10 years supporting clients including Microsoft, HP, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Don Donzal

**Don Donzal** is the founder of The Ethical Hacker Network (EH-Net), a free online magazine and community for security professionals. EH-Net was acquired by eLearnSecurity (eLS) in 2017 to bolster their free educational projects for those aspiring to be in the cyber security field. Don is now the Community Director for eLS which includes continuing as the Editor-in-Chief of EH-Net and helping advance the careers of the eLearnSecurity community and the wider cyber security community.
In former lives he was a Systems Admin for a psychiatric hospital, CTO and partner in a software company, and a Director of IT at the largest medical school in the US. In addition to also founding a security conference, Don has been involved in hundreds of articles, webinars and talks as editor, writer, speaker and host. Helping others to succeed while remaining mostly behind the scenes is his way of giving back to the security community that has given so much to him.

Carlota Sage

Raised in the wilds of Alabama by angry chickens and crazy people, Wolfpack-educated in the Tar Heel/Blue Devil state, and indoctrinated into Security by Silicon Valley appliance vendors (which are either wolves or angry chickens…maybe both), Carlota has returned to the east coast, where she runs her own consulting company. When not picking other peoples’ brains for minutia, she strings beads, destroys cars, drinks whiskey and screams into the dark, dark void that is Twitter as @carlotasage.
