The not-so-obvious path to the Hacker Family

Presented at Diana Initiative 2018, Aug. 9, 2018, 2:30 p.m. (25 minutes).

We are currently in an age in which stereotypes and issues relating to discrimination are being challenged globally. Where young girls are told to follow their dreams and the Hollywood stereotypes of a hacker being male with his hood up in a basement are dismissed. Nevertheless, as Defcon takes place around us there is no doubting that females remain in the minority.

As someone who does not fit the norms of a traditional hacker – I’m female and I can’t code – I’m here to break those norms and stereotypes a little bit further. To share my story that anything is possible and that diversity, whether through nature or nurture, only seeks to make us stronger. Most significantly, I’m not only interested in discussing the positives but also want to focus on bringing the negatives to the table as well. Too often we are required to smile, accept the situation and just move on, but only by sharing these experiences can we all grow and prevent these from becoming barriers to the next generation. It is time to begin to create a culture and that begins with each of us.
