Career development is sometimes seen as a progression of education, certification and job moves, or a hodge podge of steps from one position to the next. In order to progress in our careers, we need to build both technical and non-technical skills in different environments to challenge us and give us opportunities to learn. Most of us are actively involved in many facets of the community: volunteering, con management, presenting and competitions for fun, giving back and networking. Community involvement can also be looked at through a lens of career development. Community involvement strengthens not only the overall community but provides opportunities to stretch and learn new skills that support personal and professional growth. This presentation will examine volunteering, event management, competitions and presenting. We will cover how to evaluate community activities and how to present these on your resume, on your social media profiles and how to incorporate these activities into your interviews. We will also look at how to engage your employers, how to get the most out of the experience and how not to burn out.
