Taming Skynet : Using the Cloud to Automate Baseline Scanning

Presented at DerbyCon 2.0 Reunion (2012), Sept. 30, 2012, 2 p.m. (50 minutes)

The “cloud” has to be good for something, right? There’s a lot of very smart people spending a lot of time and money building incredibly powerful, scaleable cloud services. Let’s tap into that power and use it to our advantage.

Inspired by the Blue Team talk given by Mick Douglas at DerbyCon 2011, this talk concentrates on how to obtain a baseline for your network from the outside using both the cloud and automation. We’ll spend a short amount of time identifying what a baseline is and why we need it. Then we’ll delve into how we can use the cloud to automate the process and deliver a useful set of reports we can actually act on. Finally, we’ll take a look at a tool written for this express purpose and find out how we can get our hands on it.
