The Syrian Archive is a free and open source platform that collects, curates, verifies, and preserves visual documentation of human rights violations in Syria. The platform not only informs the public of conflict developments as they arise, but also provides an evidence base for use in future investigations. Individuals and organisations working on human rights need to find and use verified visual evidence in order to accurately report about what’s happening in conflict zones. In the case of Syria, there are more hours of online footage online than there have been hours of conflict. Hidden in that footage are untold stories, human rights violations, and perhaps even evidence of war crimes. There is currently no tool or platform that supports the collecting, verifying, and collaboratively curating of visual evidence from social media platforms: The Syrian Archive is be the first to do so.
