Why companies need to focus on a problem they do not know they have

While companies spend excessive amounts of money on cybersecurity, fraud, data leakage and virus protection for good reason, there is one aspect that is often overlooked: the fact that one in 500 employees are using company assets and networks to consume child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While most people are aware that CSAM is produced and shared online, most people do not know how the material is consumed and shared and why the pattern of dissemination puts companies and organizations at risk. The *NetClean 2017 Report* states that 65.5% of the police officers surveyed had worked on investigations where CSAM was found on workplace computers in the private sector and that there is a strong correlation between viewing CSAM and abusing children. The *NetClean 2018* report focuses not only on the insights on child sexual abuse crime from about 300 police officers around the world, but also the experience and perspective of companies actively working with CSAM detection and the conclusions that can be drawn from more than 500 actual alerts that the surveyed companies have had in total. So, to answer the initial question, there are several reasons why companies should focus on a problem they often do not know they have: * To assist law enforcement in locating people with sexual interest in children and help save children from abuse, as there is a strong correlation between viewing child sexual abuse material and committing actual abuse. * To prevent crime in the workplace, as it is an offence to possess, consume and distribute child sexual abuse material. * To safeguard company assets and networks and make sure company assets are not used for illegal and unethical behaviour. * To address the security risk with people that consume CSAM that have crossed ethical, legal and moral boundaries and could be engaged in other illicit activities and in addition, since they have a secret to keep and move in illicit circles, could be subjected to extortion that could impact and hurt the company they work for. * To proactively protect the company brand. This presentation will elaborate on the topics above and will be based on the findings of the *NetClean* reports and how they relate to the corporate world.
