Breaking Out Of Your Shell

Are you breaking out into the tech field and don't know where to start? Discuss how you can get over your first obstacle - yourself! In this talk, university students share their journey into tech and discuss the often overlooked parts of the paths they took to get to where they are now. Explore with us on the topic of imposter syndrome and the difficulties many beginners and veterans alike face within the tech industry and how you can combat it.

  • Jennifer Schwartz
    As a current student of CalPoly Pomona studying the field of InfoSec, Jennifer has a very wide variety of experiences since high school, such as becoming an alum within Girls Who Code, a high school program aimed at empowering young women with computer science. Alongside this, Jennifer has also made her mark very early on within CalPoly Pomona as she became the Head Chair of Conference for her school's information security organization, Students With An Interest In the Future of Technology (SWIFT). SWIFT is a club aimed at educating her peers through workshops and other events about cybersecurity.
  • Somar Dakak
    Starting his own home lab before college, Somar Dakak is an up-and-coming university student with a great interest in technology. As a senior at Cal Poly Pomona, Somar studies InfoSec as well as Business Intelligence, casting a wide net over the IT industry while participating in competitions and events for both fields. Since becoming Director of Labs at Students With An Interest In the Future of Technology (SWIFT), a club focused on teaching and discussing security, networking, & system administration, Somar is now looking to expand his knowledge even further while also helping educate his fellow peers.
  • Angela Lee
    Angela is currently a student at Cal Poly Pomona studying cybersecurity. She is very involved in student life and extracurricular activities, as she is on the executive board for two of the university's CIS organizations - Students With An Interest In the Future of Technology (SWIFT), and the Management Information Systems Student Association (MISSA). These clubs both strive to provide students with unique learning opportunities and aim to help members understand the technical & soft skills required to excel in the industry through workshops and other activities.
