From Private to CISO: a CISO's Journey

Presented at ShellCon 2019, Oct. 12, 2019, 10 a.m. (20 minutes).

One CISO's journey from a Marine Corps Private (and eventually Seargent) to Chief Information Security Officer. The discussion will include steps I took prior to leaving the Marines and the steps taken outside of the military. This includes principles to live by, selecting a mentor and how to determine what you have as your real goal versus the components of your goal.

  • Paul Love
    Paul Love joined CO-OP Financial Services as Chief Information Security Officer in 2017 where he leads the Information Security and Privacy program. Mr. Love brings more than 25 years in risk management, financial services and technology experience to CO-OP. He has held Information Security positions at many major organizations including Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), Ernst & Young, Microsoft, Schlumberger, Ally Financial and Fifth Third Bank. Paul started his information security career when he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served for eight years eventually achieving the rank of Sergeant. Paul holds a Master's of Science in Network Security degree, has authored/co-authored nine books on Information Security and Unix/Linux and has been the technical editor of 10 books on Linux and Unix. Mr. Love holds multiple information security and privacy certifications including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information System Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Privacy Manager (CISM), multiple privacy certifications including Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States/Europe/Canada (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPP/C) as well as other technical and professional certifications. He is also currently a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate in the field of Information Systems. In his free time, he enjoys running, reading about marketing and process improvement as well as anything related to computers.
