Life At Layer Three

Presented at Notacon 9 (2012), April 14, 2012, 4 p.m. (60 minutes).

I've always felt that getting past the first few hurdles of the networking world are the hardest to cross. The internet is full of basic networking tutorials that only go so far, starkly contrasted with intimidating documents covering large scale routing protocols and hardware that costs more than most homes. This presentation, nay Q&A session, seeks to fill in the middle ground. We will start with subnetting, move on to basic routing, and eventually end with some dynamic routing protocols. The point of this is to get the knowledge out into your hands, so I'll be answering questions from start to finish, as well as trying to convey how you can build a complex network in your own home, without breaking the bank.

Presenters:

  • Mark "nuintari" Doner
Mark has been performing systems and network design and administration since 1999, and has been involved with the Notacon network since NAC4. Unofficially placed in charge of the network for NAC5, he fully inherited the position a year later, at which point he began to introduce fundamental changes in how the network operated. For the rest of the year, Mark is the CIO of a medium sized ISP where he has been employed since 2004. His fortes include programming, system administration, and security, but his true love is networking. In his off time he is also an avid reader and historian.
