It's a Trap! Running A Con Network: An Exercise in Masochism.

Presented at Notacon 9 (2012), April 14, 2012, noon (60 minutes)

So, you have been asked to build and maintain a network for a hacker conference? The first step is easy, RUN! Run as fast as you can, and don't look back. You didn't listen did you? Okay fine, let's do this. I've been more or less running the Notacon network since NAC5. Over the years I have learned quite a few tricks to make this job just a little easier. This presentation will cover a very brief history of the evolution of Notacon's network. I will also touch base on the methods I have employed to acquire the resources vital to the success of the network. Most of time will be spent covering the technical aspects of the network, the current design and why, challenges we have encountered, and what we have in store for future years. I'll also be available for questions all weekend, for anyone who wants to talk shop.

Presenters:

  • Mark "nuintari" Doner
Mark has been performing systems and network design and administration since 1999, and has been involved with the Notacon network since NAC4. Unofficially placed in charge of the network for NAC5, he fully inherited the position a year later, at which point he began to introduce fundamental changes in how the network operated. For the rest of the year, Mark is the CIO of a medium sized ISP where he has been employed since 2004. His fortes include programming, system administration, and security, but his true love is networking. In his off time he is also an avid reader and historian.
