Trust & Safety Engineering @ GitHub

Presented at LocoMocoSec 2019, April 17, 2019, 3:45 p.m. (45 minutes)

GitHub is the #1 open source platform in the world, with over 30 million users working in over 100 million repositories. How do we protect our users from harassment while encouraging happy, healthy communities at such a large scale? In this session, I'll introduce the concept of Trust & Safety work in online platforms, talk a bit about different models used to tackle this problem, and then walk through some engineering challenges and trade-offs faced at GitHub. Learning objective: User safety and privacy, just like security, needs to be built into the platform from the ground up. It is the job of every engineer writing user-facing code to understand and use these best practices.
