IoT your Pet, Sure can.

Presented at Kawaiicon 2 (2022) Rescheduled, July 1, 2022, 11:45 a.m. (30 minutes)

Last year we added a puppy Wicket to our family to the ongoing excitement of my children and later my office. Problem was we already had a grumpy 9-year-old cat Jedi who wasn't agreeing to this. When we needed to upgrade our cat flap to a larger pet door so the dog could fit through and needed a microchip feeder so the dog couldn't eat the cat's food. Presenting a business case with the normal version vs the IoT version I convinced my amazing and understanding wife on the IoT version. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, a cascading list of personal failures has led me on a journey to spend far too much time reverse engineering the SurePetCare IoT Hub, Feeder, Pet Door and then buying all the other devices they sell to complete the collection. So now I can kick the cloud service to the kerb, or perhaps MITM all the traffic as I have found the PKCS12 certificate password armed only with a dodgy soldering iron, a cheap ZigBee sniffer off Ali and poor coding skills.

But more importantly, will the Cat and Dog ever get on?

I've worked for various organisations in Wellington and lived in The Netherlands in the days when travel was a thing working for large government, private organisations and telcos on their desktop, server, network infrastructure. Then moving into identity and access management including building and deploying I&AM stack covering internal staff provisioning, mobile, broadband and carrier management, banking and everything in between. Follow me on twitter for irregular Wicket updates when he comes into the office.
