Hardware hacking without breaking stuff

Presented at Kawaiicon 2 (2022) Rescheduled, July 2, 2022, 4:15 p.m. (30 minutes).

Hardware hacking doesn't always have to be scary and destructive. What if you're not confident at soldering? Or, your target device was super spennies and breaking it will make you sad?

Join Ben on this live hardware hacking session, where he'll demo some ‘non-destructive' hardware hacking tools. He will install a missing component, dump flash storage, and connect up to JTAG debug pins without soldering or hot air.

These tools have their limitations though. Ben will talk about when you can get away with this easy-mode hardware hacking, or when you need to roll up your sleeves and inhale some toxic soldering fumes.

Presenters:

  • Ben Knight
Ben is a hacker at CyberCX. You may have seen his name pop up because of an AuThEnTiCaTiOn bYpAsS, or owning FortiPortal with a hardcoded password. Shelling consumer routers was a gateway drug, and he now enjoys hardware hacking. Despite a complete lack of electronics skills.
