Pirate Radio: Riding the Ragged Edges

Presented at Kernelcon 2020 Virtual, March 28, 2020, 11:50 a.m. (20 minutes)

For the hobbyist, radio is technically fascinating. For the uninitiated, black-magical. What they both have in common? The FCC will be happy to fine the S#!& out of you if you violate the law regarding illegal uses of reserved bands, particularly commercial FM frequencies. We'll talk about why "pirates" pirate on FM, affordable gear options, and how to experiment with the technology without being fined back to the stoneage.

Presenters:

  • Michael Tomasiewicz
Michael is a Lead Cyber Engineer for the Omaha Public Power District. He is usually refered to as 'Mikey T', as Tomasiewicz is wholly unpronounceable. Mikey T is not s0pr1337hx0r, but considered in some circles to be an idiot savant, sans that pesky savant part. Regardless, he is an accomplished and entertaining speaker. In his spare time you will find him either reading, taking something apart, or loudly cursing a scuffed up 1.68" dimpled projectile.
