Old School Phreaking

Presented at HOPE Number Nine (2012), July 15, 2012, 6 p.m. (60 minutes)

Members of The Old School will regale the assembled throngs with tales of “The Golden Age of Phone Phreaking.” Those were the days of in-band signaling when anyone who could put out a tone of 2600 hertz could control the “Long Lines” network.

Presenters:

  • Tom Santa Monica
Tom Santa Monica’s phreaking activities during 1970-1971 predate the Esquire magazine article of October 1971. Tom’s favorite activity was exploiting race conditions in Automatic Electric 53 directors and other step-by-step equipment.
  • John Draper
  • Richard Cheshire / The Cheshire Catalyst as Cheshire Catalyst
