Demistifying data science in security

Presented at Diana Initiative 2018, Aug. 10, 2018, 1:30 p.m. (25 minutes).

Data science is buzz word across all tech fields, but what is it really? How does it fit into infosec? And how can you get started if you’re interested in this field?

During this talk we’ll explore the answers to these questions. Along the way you’ll find out what security data scientists lose sleep over, why Machine Learning is great but not the be all and end all, and how you too can harness the power of data! Whether you want to learn more about data science in security, or are a complete beginner to both fields – this talk will start you on the way to discovering more.

I'm a data scientist working in security. I used to use supercomputers to study the evolution of galaxies as an astrophysicist. Now I tackle more down-to-earth challenges, helping companies use different data sets to understand and address security risk. As part of the team at Panaseer (a London-based security start up), I work with security functions in global financial firms, applying data science to help solve strategic and operational challenges. When I joined the infosec industry ~3 years ago and attended events where there were often just one or two other women I found it incredibly disappointing – so these days I am proactive in trying to redress the balance. This involves trying to be visible as a woman in security and communicate what I do, as well as working to drive in-house diversity initiatives and build an inclusive culture with my colleagues at Panaseer.
