Injecting Electromagnetic Pulses Into The Electric Grid

Presented at DEF CON 18 (2010), Unknown date/time (Unknown duration)

This talk is about injecting EMP into the grid and infrastructure. The mechanism is through conduction, which is connecting a wire from your EMP source directly to a power line cable. Currently there are three documented mechanisms for injecting EMP into the grid. They are H bomb explosion, a solar electromagnetic storm and lightning. These mechanism use radiation as a means of coupling to the grid... The power of the radiation method falls off as 1/the distance squared. The grid acts as a large receiving antenna Injecting EMP by conduction falls off as a LRC circuit therefore it needs far less power to create a disruption. The grid acts as a large transmitting antenna. I will demo some devices pulsed and talk about inductive coupling capacitive coupling, radiation and conductive Note, If you disbelieve my DEF CON 17 or 18 talk, I will take the Pepsi challenge. Let me come to your home or place of business and I will inject EMP into your electrical system and pulse your digital devices. (Myth busters are you out there?)

Presenters:

  • Paul F. Renda - Computer Security Analyst and Futurist
Paul started his career working on IBM 360 and the PDP 11. He was an early advocate of using Hacking Software to check corporate data systems and has presented talks at the COMPUTER SECURITY INSTITUTE. Paul's articles have appeared in the Info Security magazine. In 1995 Paul, developed a defense against WAR DIALERS. His process was published in Info Security Magazine. A dialer is a program that dials a series of phone number and logs number that are connected to a modem. He is currently a computer security analyst and futurist.
