The lengths you go to for a almost useless phone

Presented at Canterbury Hacker Camp (2022), Nov. 26, 2022, 3:20 p.m. (Unknown duration)

After finding a classic Lumia Windows phone and bricking it within 2 hours of owning it.

The journey starts with removing the flash from the motherboard and attempting to flash the OS directly onto the chip.

Have you ever tried reballing a chip less then 6mm square? Lots of microscope and x-ray action is required just to see the pins. Luckily I can access to all the equipment needed to rebuild this useless phone. I hope it still goes when its all back together.

I've always loved hardware hacking but this takes it to a whole new level. Removing surface mount components from inside a phone requires specialised tools and techniques plus a x-ray machine, just because.
