USB - How does it even work?

The quantum state of USB. Different USB version keeps you confused what to expect from a port? Why are they all different colours and how many different USB-Plugs are there? I'll be clearing up these annoyances as well as giving you a brief overview of the USB protocol and what happens when you plug in a device into your computer.
