Protecting your toys - Attempts at securing the IoT

Presented at BSides Austin 2016, March 31, 2016, 11 a.m. (60 minutes)

Slapping Linux onto every object with a power source seems to be the way of the future, but little is being done to think these things through from the perspective of security. That certainly isn't going to stop us from buying new toys now is it? After experimenting with many common items that make up the internet of insecure things I will share my findings on how to best secure and enjoy this newly wired world. I will talk about the underlying assumptions these devices make, common methods they utilize to communicate and what types of information is at risk.
